"Nichols? You still alive?"
Art Jeffries

Jonathan Nichols, better known as Jack, is an old friend of Art Jeffries, and later, of Simon Lynch as well. Jack is a detective with CPD, and has been for some time, likely since Jeffries joined the Chicago FBI in 1984. He was assigned to investigate the Lynch murders on June 7, 1998, after 911 received an attempted call by the dying Martin Lynch - first responders were on the scene within ten minutes, even as Peter Burrell and Shayes fled through the back alleyway, undectected by the arriving police. Jack was determing the exact cause of Martin Lynch's death when Art Jeffries arrived under orders from his boss, Joe Lomax. Jack believed what he saw to be an open-and-shut case of murder-suicide and that Martin had gotten [quote] "...tired of knocking himself out..." for a 'retarded' Simon, though Jeffries realized that the gun Martin Lynch was holding was far too expensive a weapon for the working-class father, [quote] "How's a guy that's so broke afford a $1500 handgun?" Simply loaning Jeffries his cell phone to call Lomax, he was put into an awkward position after Jeffries discovered Simon Lynch as the boy mimicked the phone's dial tone and he was forced to provide CPD officers for security at Concordia, to guard the boy from a threat perceived only by the ever-observant Jeffries.
